Recycle + Reinterpret + Reuse + Re-love = wrap up with Desigual ❤️ Ecoalf

History repeats itself: we started in 1984 with the creation of a denim jacket made from vintage jeans. In 2020, we desigualised our collaboration with the brand Ecoalf based on already-manufactured garments. “Where the world sees waste, we see an opportunity, we see creativity.” Desigual and Ecoalf have a lot of upcycling in common.

Limited edition.

Last season we launched a collection designed in collaboration with Ecoalf: a series of warm, winter garments made from waste and recycled raw materials. A year later, we realised that we needed to bring fresh products to the table and desigualise the collection even further, but the garments had already been manufactured and were ready to be sold. The premise was very simple: what is the most Desigual way to create a new collection that is respectful to the environment and where everything that has been manufactured so far can be reused? By merging the garments that have already been made. We changed the colours of the sleeves and added hoods made from upcycled denim to create an exclusive online collection of 500 items that defines what Desigual and Ecoalf are about.

The raw material: waste

We’ve joined forces with this Spanish brand because we believe in second chances and creating durable, unique garments. These coats and jackets are made from waste and are intended to endure many winters. Creativity? Turned up to 11. Sustainability? Same thing.

*And, also... on 7 November we’re clearing plastic from Barcelona Beach alongside the Pachamama Market collective (@pachamamamarketbcn). We’ll be cleaning the surface of the beach, and also the seafloor with the help of some divers. All the health and safety measures established by the Catalan Government will be complied with as we show some love for this corner of the city that is home to our headquarters. The goal? To remove 1.5 tonnes of waste from the sea and the beach.

The FW20 collection: sustainable

The short jacket: mix

This sustainable short padded jacket is made from recycled materials and comes with a surprise: two detachable and interchangeable hoods. One is made from used jeans and is completely unique due to the artisanal process used to make it – no two are the same. It also comes with a padded hood that matches the rest of the coat. Colours: white, black and red. Plus the denim hood, which is blue. Sustainability: 100% upcycled from textile waste to reduce the consumption of natural resources. 100 limited-edition jackets in each colour.

*A revision of the classic FW19 collection that didn’t mix colours.

The reversible bob: the second life of matter

The first reversible 2-in-1 hat designed by Ecoalf exclusively for Desigual. Made from a percentage of recycled materials.

Black backpack: fromrecycled nylon to backpack

Practical, lightweight and water-resistant. To make it, we used a percentage of recycled polyester from bottles in its production and reduced water consumption.

The long coat: rethink

A long padded coat with a detachable hood. Made from recycled polyester, it suits the urban lifestyle thanks to its quality and comfort. Colours: a combination of black and green, with one colour on the body and the other on the sleeves and hood. Sustainability: made from recycled and sustainable fibres. 100 limited-edition coats in each of the two colour combinations.

*A revision of the classic FW19 collection that didn’t mix colours.

Blue backpack: a sustainable all-rounder

This backpack is ready for anything and respectful to the environment. Its composition includes a percentage of recycled polyester.

Sneakers: what would you make with 5 plastic bottles?

Recycled polyester shoes like these, for example.

About Ecoalf

Ecoalf: because there’s no planet B.

For the past ten years, this Spanish brand has been turning waste from the sea into sneakers and rubbish into high-quality fashion items. They work with plastic bottles found on the sea floor; recycled nylon, wool and cotton; and recycled tyres. A great deal of R&D is required to process all this waste and turn it first into pellets, then filaments, then fabrics and, finally, into garments and accessories.

“Ecoalf launched in 2009, inspired by my frustration at the excessive use of the planet’s natural resources and the large quantity of waste generated by industrialised countries. The goal was to manufacture the first generation of fashion items made with recycled materials that could match top non-recycled products in terms of quality, design and technical properties. They show that we don’t need to keep overusing the planet’s natural resources indiscriminately.”

Ecoalf is innovation, sustainability and design. They recycle coffee, wool and cotton, and remove plastic bottles and fishing nets from the sea which their engineers then turn into high-tech materials. This company has placed corporate social responsibility at the core of its business model. According to Javier Goyeneche, president and founder of Ecoalf, “Reducing environmental impact is everyone’s responsibility. This is why alliances between fashion industry companies are essential for continuing progress towards a model that facilitates the manufacturing of sustainable fashion. Joining forces with Desigual in this effort to pair their unique designs and creativity with sustainability and a commitment to the environment is both challenging and satisfying.”

About Desigual

Desigual: love the world.

In 1984, we created our first iconic jacket from second-hand jeans. When the term “upcycling” didn’t even exist, we breathed new life into multiple pairs of jeans that were destined to become waste. It was then that we realised we had a commitment to creating innovative and affordable products that inspire happiness. A very important part of this is its foundation: we work to offer a carefully selected range of raw materials, with an increasing focus on natural fibres. Moreover, we are improving our manufacturing techniques to make unique, longer-lasting garments.

Sustainability and corporate social responsibility permeate every step we take. We aim to promote a fashion production model that is increasingly respectful of people and the planet. The quality of our garments and production process is one of Desigual’s strongest commitments to its customers, which the company approaches from a perspective of ongoing improvement. We have our own materials and purchasing policy; a Code of Conduct aimed at suppliers that establishes the social, employment and environmental requirements they must comply with; and monitoring and auditing processes focused on the supply chain to guarantee compliance from suppliers with regard to human rights and international employment regulations. We are increasingly incorporating sustainable fibres, in fact, they are already present in 20% of our collection.
