Desigual sets itself a new challenge for 2025: making 100% of its cotton more sustainable

The company has joined the Better Cotton Initiative, which promotes sustainable cotton cultivation standards and practices in 85 countries. This agreement joins the recent incorporation of Desigual into the Sustainable Apparel Coalition, both of these developments are part of our Sustainability and CSR Plan.

Barcelona, 28 May 2020. Desigual is continuing to solidify its commitment to sustainability with a new partnership: the company has joined the Better Cotton Initiative, a global platform that promotes sustainable standards and practices for cotton cultivation. In doing so, Desigual sets itself a new goal for the future: ensuring that 100% of the cotton it uses in its garments will be more sustainable by 2025.

The Better Cotton Initiative seeks to transform global cotton production based on the three pillars of sustainability: environmental, social and economic, and to make Better Cotton Initiative cotton a widely used and marketed product.

“Our commitment to the environment starts with the choice of the raw materials we use to manufacture our collections. The partnership we have entered into with the Better Cotton Initiative allows us to take a step forward in the transition to a more sustainable fashion production model, establishing synergies that enable us to join forces and tackle the sustainability challenges facing the fashion industry,” said Clara Delmuns, Desigual's Product Director.

The agreement is part of the Sustainability and CSR Plan being implemented by the company over a three-year period, with which Desigual is laying the foundations for its sustainability strategy. The commitments assumed by the company include making 50% of our fibres sustainable by 2023, increasing the transparency and traceability of our supply chain, and the complete removal of plastic from our packaging and consumables in the short term.

The partnership with the Better Cotton Initiative comes on the heels of the company's recent incorporation into the Sustainable Apparel Coalition, one of the textile industry's leading alliances for sustainable production. Desigual is also part of other entities such as the Textile Exchange and Amfori, in keeping with its commitment to ethical, sustainable and high-quality production.

A declaration of principles – backed up by tangible actions – through which the company is defining its future objectives in terms of its commitment to a sustainable fashion production model that respects people and the planet.

Desigual's 2020-2023 Sustainability and CSR Plan covers our various projects and initiatives regarding products, suppliers, the environment, employees, customers and the community for the next three years.
